SuperTrip2 2026

SuperTrip2 2026 is the second part of our celebration of Carey's 60th birthday. We recognise our privilege (of health, time, resources) enables our ticking off a few more special experiences and we are grateful (and joyful) to be able to do it and to share it. We hope you enjoy our photos of SuperTrip2 2026.

We celebrated Carey's 60th birthday in December 2025 and set off on SuperTrip 2026 in April. We so appreciated taking a Fall break last year, we could not resist a second bite at the travel cherry this year too, using Carey's special birthday as an excuse (not that we need much in the way of one - joy is enough).

SuperTrip2 2026 is in fact 3 trips, held together with some hanging out in London. We will base ourselves in London from the start of September to mid-October. From there, we will head up to Scotland and walk the Great Glen from Fort William to Inverness.

A few days more in London are followed by walking the last 2 weeks of the Camino Portuguese, from Porto to Santiago along the coast. We walked the Portuguese camino in March/April 2025. Then, the last stages were lashed with rain, wind and one full-blown Tropical storm. We want to walk it again in better weather, at least, that's the hope.

Finally, topped and tailed with a few more London days, we will spend 5 nights in Istanbul, Turkey. We have both been, but many years ago and never together. It will be a city break, echoing the quartering of European and American cities we did in the (working) first decade of our relationship.

This year, I have, perhaps, finally turned the mental corner from being unemployed to being retired. I still hope for purpose and contribution, but I have a lightness that has given our 2026 SuperTrips a sort of "glow" for me - an expansiveness that underpins my gratitude and approach to this stage of our shared life. We both have an attitude of "let's try it and see what happens" This is not recklessness, but feeling more free to try what life brings, certain we have our own capacities - and each other's backs.

We fly back to Calgary on October 15th, after Thanksgiving, but in time to join our home community, based around Knox UCC, for Halloween, Advent and Christmas. We have a splendid Fall/Winter of participation and volunteering to look forward to, rounding out a memorable Big Birthday Year!
